چکیده

My objectives were to (a) measure the size-dependent particle concentration and settling velocities with the use of newly developed instruments funded through this program. These instruments, LISST100 and LISST-ST employ the principles of multi-angle light scattering and a mathematical inversion of these measurements for estimating the particle concentration in 32 log-spaced (equi-phi) intervals. The measurements were to be made from a tripod placed on the bottom; (b) the second objective was to examine the measurements in conjunction with bottom stress measurements made by the BASS velocimeter array placed nearby.

Optical and physical variability on timescales from minutes to the seasonal cycle on the New England shelf July 1996 to June 1997

High-resolution time series of physical and bio-optical data were obtained using moored and bottom-mounted instruments on the southern New England continental shelf during the Coastal Mixing and Optics experiment (CMO) from July 1996 through June 1997. The most prominent physical and bio-optical signals observed during the experiment were associated with the seasonal variability. However, sever...

Spectral particulate attenuation and particle size distribution in the bottom boundary layer of a continental shelf

Spectral attenuation and absorption coefficients of particulate matter and colocated hydrographic measurements were obtained in the Mid-Atlantic Bight during the fall of 1996 and the spring of 1997 as part of the Coastal Mixing and Optics experiment. Within the bottom boundary layer (BBL) the magnitude of the beam attenuation decreased and its spectral shape became steeper with distance from th...

Dynamics of Love-Type Waves in Orthotropic Layer Under the Influence of Heterogeneity and Corrugation

The present problem deals with the propagation of Love-type surface waves in a bedded structure comprises of an inhomogeneous orthotropic layer and an elastic half-space. The upper boundary and the interface between two media are considered to be corrugated. An analytical method (separation of variables) is adapted to solve the second order PDEs, which governs the equations of motion. Equations...

Turbulent Mixing in Oceanic Surface and Benthic Boundary Layers

The objectives of the specific effort being reported are to improve the fundamental knowledge of turbulent mixing and diffusion processes occurring in oceanic boundary layers, with special emphases on the surface mixed layer and the wave-current boundary layer in coastal oceans. In the studies of surface mixed layers, the focus is on the penetration of a mixed layer (say, driven by the wind) in...

Simulation of entrainment near a density stratified layer: Laboratory experiment and LIDAR observation

In this paper a simple qualitative model of the growth of a mixed layer adjacent to a uniform layer with a stably stratified layer is presented. The depth variations of mixed layer can be estimated from direct measurements. The Entrainment of a stably stratified layer into a turbulent mixed layer in a confined region was studied in laboratory for different Richardson numbers. The internal waves...
